Gold Mountain / Lucky Baldwin Mine

Big Bear, California – San Bernardino Mountains

Nestled just above Baldwin Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains, the Gold Mountain / Lucky Baldwin Mine stands as one of Southern California’s most historically significant gold mining landmarks. Its story weaves together the pioneering spirit of the 19th-century California Gold Rush, the ambition of legendary investor Elias J. “Lucky” Baldwin, and today’s revival under DX Gold Corp, marking a return of responsible and productive mining to Big Bear Valley.

The Discovery

During the 1850s, prospectors began scouring the Big Bear and Holcomb Valley region for placer gold. The discovery that transformed the area came in 1873, when brothers Barney and Charley Carter unearthed a quartz-rich gold ledge on the north slope of Baldwin Lake—then called Carters’ Quartz Hill. Their find quickly attracted the attention of investors.

The Baldwin Era

In 1874, the property was acquired by the renowned entrepreneur “Lucky” Baldwin, who saw potential for large-scale hard-rock mining. He invested more than US $250,000, building a 40-stamp mill, wagon roads, a water-flume system, and worker housing at what became the booming town of Bairdstown (later renamed Doble).

On March 6, 1875, the mill began operating, crushing up to 100 tons of ore per day—a monumental engineering feat for the time. Yet the ore proved of lower grade than expected, and operations ceased within eight months. The stamp mill was later destroyed by fire around 1876, marking the end of Baldwin’s short-lived but visionary enterprise.

Renewed Ambition

The mine was revived in 1899 by the industrialist J.R. De La Mar, introducing cyanide processing to recover gold from low-grade ore. A second 40-stamp mill was constructed higher on the mountain, and production resumed. However, the rich vein never fully materialized, and operations ended again by 1903.

Sporadic small-scale mining continued into the 1940s, as independent operators sought to rework the historic stopes and dumps. Though no major producer emerged, Gold Mountain remained a symbol of California’s golden optimism.

Legacy and Preservation

Today, the remnants of Baldwin’s ambitious venture—stone foundations, tailings, and faint outlines of Doble’s townsite—remain scattered across the hills above Baldwin Lake. These landmarks stand as cultural relics of early California industry and the pioneering vision that helped shape the state’s mining frontier.

A New Chapter: DX Gold Corp

In 2025, DX Gold Corp acquired 100 % leasing rights to the Gold Mountain / Lucky Baldwin Mine, positioning the project as a flagship property within its U.S. portfolio.

Unlike most historical mining sites, Gold Mountain retains complete regulatory documentation and permitting eligibility, including Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and U.S. Forest Service approvals dating back to the original Hardrock Preference Right Lease. This ensures the project is fully compliant and production-ready, a rarity in California’s gold-mining landscape.

Significance

  • Historic Provenance: One of California’s earliest large-scale hard-rock gold operations.

  • Strategic Location: Only two hours from Los Angeles, within the established Big Bear mining district.

  • Cultural Heritage: Preserves the spirit of Lucky Baldwin’s enterprise and the frontier ingenuity of 19th-century miners.

  • Modern Revival: DX Gold Corp is reactivating a historically productive district with modern technology, environmental stewardship, and community engagement.

Heritage Vision

DX Gold Corp’s development of Gold Mountain is more than a return to mining—it’s a restoration of legacy. By combining modern sustainability with California’s historic mining heritage, the project honors over a century of exploration while introducing new economic value and responsible resource development to the Big Bear region.
